6. Transport Your Dog Safely

Laws are created to keep you and your dog safe. It is good to obey them because you care about your dog and his safety. Following the rules helps you and your dog to be good citizens.

This may be a law in your city:

It is against the law in many cities for a dog to ride in the back of a pickup truck without being safely tethered (tied) to the truck.

There are several reasons why riding in the back of a pickup is dangerous. Can you think of some reasons?

Answers:
1. A dog can fall out of a truck if it has to stop quickly.

2. A dog can get things in his eyes.

3. A dog can get too hot in the sun.

If you must take your dog in the back of your truck, buy a special harness from a pet store. This lets your dog walk around the bed of the truck, but keeps him safe from falling out.

It is not fun for your dog to run errands. Sitting and waiting for you in the car is not fun and can be dangerous.

It is also a law that dogs must not be left in cars that do not have enough air coming in through the windows. On a warm day, it only takes 10 minutes for the car temperature to reach 120 degrees!

It's best not to take your dog with you to run errands. He will probably be bored. He will be much more comfortable and happy waiting at home for you. If you must leave your dog in the car, leave the windows open wide and park in the shade.
